The Highway Wanderers Chapter was formed on 7th May 1994 at a meeting held at the 8th Anniversary Rally at Nambour, Queensland.
The meeting was brought about by submissions from Philip and Helene Procter to the National Management Committee (as it then was) that full time travellers needed their own Chapter to suit their different needs, to give them a voice at Chapter level and to satisfy their need to belong and be members of the family.
28 CMCA members attended that meeting together with several members of the National Management Committee.
The name Highway Wanderers was suggested by Val Benstead.
The inaugural Committee was President - John Frings, Vice Presidents - Col Williams and Val Benstead and Secretary/Treasurer - Philip Procter.
At its inauguration, it was decided to restrict membership of the Chapter to people who spend at least six months each year on the road. The General Meeting at Townsville in June 1999 resolved to open membership of the chapter to all members of the CMCA irrespective of the actual time travelling or living in a motorhome during the year.
Initially Chapter meetings were held only at National and Anniversary rallies but from 1997 meetings and gatherings have been arranged at various other venues.
In June 1998, the Highway Wanderers hosted the 12th Anniversary Rally at Roma, Queensland. With almost 1000 motorhomes, this was a great success and no mean feat for a group of people who are spread all around Australia and all of whom are travelling most of the time.
With more than 180 members (about 350 individuals), the Highway Wanderers is a flourishing Chapter with more and more people finding that life on the road, brings more than enough friendship, pleasure, interest, and enjoyment to compensate for the little problems and minor inconveniences.
