Presidents Report

Hi to all,
I hope all members that went to the Rally had a good time, enjoyed
catching up with your fellow members and have returned home safely.
I was really looking forward to the trip, especially across the
Nullabor,.But as the saying goes the best laid plans often go astray.
From what I've heard lots of good times were shared.
To so many of you who rang and wished John well, I can report he is
coping quite well with the treatment but gets very tired. We will know
his progress at the end of the month.
Its hard to believe that Christmas is only six weeks away, so I take
this chance to wish all of you a great Christmas and a happy and
healthy New Year.
We are looking forward to Sale next year and will catch up with you
then. We plan to travel north next winter and do the mini rallies at
Townsville & Mareeba.

Keep travelling safe   Vicki

Secretary Report

Hello to all Highway Wanderers wherever you happen to be wandering. Kalgoorlie rally is

done and dusted and you will see from the reports in this newsletter that everything went pretty well. As none of the committee was able to attend a great big THANK YOU  goes out to Dave and Jan Binskin,  Pete and Trish Gallagher and various others for helping you all survive without us. It obviously wasn’t as much fun as usual but it’s hard to get good help these days and you can only work with what you are given (Just joking Joyce). The reports from the rally are included in this newsletter and once again thanks guys for filling in.

I know the rally at Sale in 2012 is a fair way off but I have been thinking that for those planning to attend and then heading North it may be a great opportunity to get a Movin, Movin, Movin Up North convoy happening. In 2010 a lot of HW members had a great time slowly travelling to Mareeba for various events. There must be lot’s of interesting places or events that could be incorporated in slowly moving North to Christmas in July at Mareeba. If we could establish some sort of timetable then members can pick it up along the way. Ideas welcome. With Christmas only six weeks away we hope that you all have a very merry time and that 2012 is kind to you. See you at Sale or somewhere else on the road.

Bye for now.

Keep safe and cheers

Chris and Barryne Wilson

KALGOORLIEDISC BOWLS REPORT by Trish Gallagher

We entered 12 teams and had 11 accepted

3 x Mens Triples

4 x Ladies Triples

4 x Mixed Triples

First round we showed how rusty we were. Even so we managed to get 4 teams to the next round – 3 x mixed triples and 1 x Ladies. Next round left us with only one team HW Mixed triples 1- Kim Saunders, Barry Pittard and Dave Binskin. Unfortunately their game was at 10am on the second day and it took them two ends to come good. Congratulations to one and all who participated. A special thanks to those who played for the first time to make up the numbers. Hans Van Dyk we all thank you for your umpiring efforts as you certainly held the flag high for the HWs

KALGOORLIECHAPTER FORUM MEETING

Dave Binskin and Peter Gallagher attended the chapter forum. The following points were brought up in question time re HW member’s request.

1.     Power allocation at rallies – the ballot system will remain in place

2.     Fee rise – reason for this given is that the board is worried about what would happen if Ken Tame pulled out representing large loss of income – this rise consequently defeated at AGM.

Other Info from the meeting as follows

1.     Board still looking at a new site for the CMCA HQ.

2.     CMCA still working with government  to supply VAST satellite boxes at a much discounted price to members

3.     Changes to banner parade that only those chapters with members present at the rally to be paraded.

4.     Richard Barwick new GM taking on extra responsibilities following resignation of John Osborne as CEO. No new CEO to be appointed at this stage.

5.     New committees of each chapter to notify CMCA HQ when new office bearers elected at their respective AGMs

6.     Secretaries of each chapter to notify head office of all assets i.e. clothing ; cash on hand  etc for insurance purposes.

7.     CMCA is lobbying government to make caravan parks compliant with govt rules and those compliant be advised to come up to the mark or close.

DAVES DIRT – KALGOORLIE RALLY

(Also included WA writings)

1.     Les of  “KosWeKan”  now known as 12.8 as wife Kim unable to watch TV if batteries drop below 12.8V which will cause Les’s beer fridge to warm up. And where is the fridge  - yes you guessed it – in the shower.  Try having a shower with a 75l Waco!!!

2.     Still on the subject of 12.8 (aka Les) he managed to throw a curved disc bowl during the completion which nearly took out 4 teams -just escaped  various head injuries and knee capping.

3.     Jan B alias Nurse Nastie took out the animal cruelty award leaving Oskar tied up outside the trade tent at the rally for nearly 2 hours when she forgot him.  Even received a phone call from a concerned member. Oskar now having daily counselling and refuses to leave the motorhome.

4.     Pest award to boot scooting Georgina who unable to attend rally kept phoning me to be updated on the gossip. Piss off Georgie!!!

5.     New members Two Fat Ladies also up for RSPCA citation as dog Chloe  found wandering rally site lead in tow.

6.     While on dogs; 25 was the record number of dogs attending happy hour representing lots of dog turds.

7.     Drunk of the rally – no not Derek aka Horror  but Trish aka mother hen – also best face plant in a gravel pit.

8.     The Gold Rush Ball - 70 HWs attended including a few adopted hangers on. Derek won the best dressed turning up as a gay miner and so convincing was his portrayal that we think he could have gone to the dark side. Nice photo taken by Chris 4 dogs may be viewed on more risqué websites.

9.     Where the bloody hell are you award goes to Eddie 4 dogs  for getting lost not once but twice for over 2 hours in Kalgoorlie  - had to have a police escort  back !!!

10.                        “Rats Nest” gets the unlucky award for being sited at the arse end of the rally site for last ten rallies – is there a meaning to this ????

KALGOORLIE  RALLY REPORT

Jan Binskin

In the absence of our president Vicki who would really have loved to be at the rally I have taken on the task of writing a general revue of the rally with input from a few HW members

Being  first time volunteers Dave and I got another view of the rally with all its inevitable politicking and moans and groans etc. However, from all our other members the general consensus is that it was a very different rally some positive points and of course a few negatives.

First the site provides many of us for the first GREEN GRASS site for many months and plenty of showers and hot water after a few hiccups. We had only one afternoon of rain and a mixture of sun and the inevitable wind . HW Happy hours were well attended mainly at “Gary’s Joy” then moving to “Wheel Estate" “ which provided a bigger venue for bush skittles. We adopted a couple of first timers and a few new members who joined in the frivolity.  Secretary Chris was missed with his horn and his biscuit game.

No medals this time in disc bowls but lots of fun both on the practice field  and in comp. We did very well in the photo comp with Kim, Eddie, Pete (aka Rudi)and Derek taking out prizes. No talent quest this rally so no presentation from our HW choir although we had a member (one fat lady) in CMCA choir and  Jo, well hidden behind a larger person strutted her Ukulele talents.

If you were hoping to eat out at the rally, there was a distinct lack of retail food outlets – a spud man; ice cream van and coffee van as well as limited booking for a catered meal which if you were able to get a table was excellent value. You had to cook or hike into town. Also lots of food regulations here meant no HW barbecue possible.

The ball was a fun affair as always with band and dancing girls (too well clothed according to some patrons) providing the entertainment . Lots of colourful costumes but lacking a lot of the flamboyancy of other rallies. We had 70 HWs and thanks to Trish for agonising over the table bookings (that story could take up a whole report in itself) and organising the decorating – a highway theme to build upon for further rallies.

The night entertainment after the usual official proceedings each night was predominantly country style but as not listed in programme you were never sure who would be performing as the artists rotated thru 3 rally venues during the week . Mixed reactions re the artists from those who were awake long enough to take in the night time events.

Down side of the rally was the ongoing pilfering of items such as toilet paper which occurred in the first week (volunteers only on site!!!) within 10 minutes of being restocked. Rumour had it that a competition was being held between some groups to see who could pilfer the most!!!  It is a sad reflection of society too that many volunteers working were abused by other members whilst going about their duties. It is also sad to see that some volunteers when placed in a role had a definite change in persona. What happened to good old manners and consideration for others.

In all I am sure we all had a good time and I for one am pleased to be a HW and will be back again in Sale.

Highway Wanderers/Big Rigs

Easter in August

Easter in August was organised by Lance and Kay Trestrail for members of the Highway Wanderers and Big Rigs. Held on Friday 26th August – Sunday 28th August 2011 at Tressies Caravan Park and Museum Kalgarin in WA the get together was enjoyed by all who attended. The park facilities and museum are a credit to Merv and Laurel and a tour of the museum took us all back a few years. We started off with a BBQ on Friday night, picked up by the local school bus and taken to the Kalgarin club for dinner on Saturday night. The meals were excellent, even had easter eggs. Next morning Vanessa our tour bus driver and Jainine our guide took us for about a four hour drive including Wave Rock and surrounding attractions. Later that afternoon we had jilgies thanks to Kay and Laurel. Had a BBQ Sunday night and most people left the park on Monday having had a wonderful weekend.

From the webmaster

Did you know that we have our own web site?

www.highwaywanderers.com

Now I know that not everyone is “internet savvy” but you don’t have to have your own computer to get on the web. Maybe you know someone who is hooked up to the Internet or maybe ask someone in an Internet café to show you how to get onto the HW website. It’s a great way to keep up to date when you are on the road or at home.

Highway Wanderers Chatroom

If you have access to the Internet and want to start chatting with other HW members all you need to do is go to the HW website  www.highwaywanderers.com  and click on the link "My Stuff". The chatroom is exclusive to HW members and if you want to participate I will make sure you are a HW member and then give you the info to enable you to start chatting with other HW members in the chatroom. As well as allowing you to chat (typing and talking) online it is a great way let other people know what you are doing and where you are doing it. (Not sure what IT means but whatever IT is we all hope you are enjoying doing IT.) You can use the chatroom to get all sorts of info from other members, where to go, where not to go, who is travelling where and enabling people to get together if they are going to be in the same area. If you need info on stuff in general an email to the mail list will most likely get a reply from someone who can help and because everyone on the list will see the questions and answers then the rest of us will benefit as well. It's a win win really and we need as many fellow chapter members to be involved as possible. The chatroom is a closed group and only HW members can participate so don’t worry about getting junk mail etc. Do yourself a favour and take a look.

Paul Hildebrand

It is with great sadness that I let you know of the passing of Paul Hildebrand.

Paul was a Highway Wanderer for the last 6 years and in that time made many friends.  Paul will be remembered for lots of reasons but one that springs to my mind was the number of jokes that he had stored in his mind and could bring forth at a moments notice. Quite often around the camp fire you would find Paul entertaining us folks with his limitless supply of jokes.

Anyone wishing to pass on their condolences to Margaret can email me at webmaster@highwaywanderers.com and I will get them to her.

We offer our condolences to Family and Friends.
