From the President
Is it just me…………or is anyone
else questioning their own immortality? I
write this report as we hear yet of more deaths
and destruction at the hands of the Victorian
fires. The fact that life is so fragile
reinforces my belief to live life to the
fullest which is emphasized in our wonderful
Highway Wanderers lifestyle. Our thoughts
and wishes go to anyone that may be caught down
in the fires or have suffered tragedies
associated with that terrible act of
nature. For this past year or so, my
father has been fighting against Golden staph
and is slowly loosing his battle. Like
most of that age group, he is a stubborn old
bugger and refuses to give in! So Max and
I have “inherited” my 88 year old Mum who is a
real lady and no trouble really but requires
almost constant supervision with her
dementia. The point I am
getting to I guess is that life is just that
–LIFE- it encompasses giving, sharing,
foregoing of hobbies and travel, heartache and
sacrifice, as well as the “laughter and living
longer” bit. I am having fun with Mum and
we share many laughs together while the black
cloud of Dads health hangs over us. I
thank my Max for allowing me to have this
special time, as well as the Highway Wanderers
committee and you yourselves our members for
your understanding. As we haven’t been
able to attend all rallys and am not in contact
with a lot of people, I am sure someone else
can do a better job of President. Because
I have no crystal ball to see the future, I
will be standing down in October at our annual
meeting, so look around and have a think about
who is available and willing. We are still
trying to get to Whyalla but are having
difficulty finding respite positions. I
assure you, if given half a chance-we will be
there and you won’t get me off the dance floor
till the band goes
home!
So be kind to yourselves
everyone, love your families and do today
everything you wanted
to.
“That
my friend is how life is and now my tale is
told.
So enjoy each day
and live it up……………
Before you’re too
damned old!!!
Happy Traveling and hope to
see you all at
Whyalla
Carol and Max
Dahler
From the Secretary
Hello to all Highway
Wanderers wherever you happen to be wandering.
Hope you all had a happy Christmas and that
2009 is a good one. My new
year resolution is to stop
looking at the super fund because I just get
depressed and to think about all the good
places we can go because at least the price of
diesel has come down. We are still at our
little house on the prairie at Ancona
which is near Mansfield in Nth East Victoria.
We have had some other HW members visiting with
us for a little while and happy hours have been
very enjoyable even though it’s bloody hot and
we can’t remember what its like when it rains.
Looking forward to taking off in early March to
head to the rally at Whyalla. Not a lot has
been happening as far as HW activities are
concerned. Our new webmaster has revamped the
HW website and it looks great. The HW chat
group seems to have regular posts from members
and hopefully that will continue to be used as
a communications medium for those members who
regularly access the internet. I mentioned in
the last newsletter that m
aybe at Whyalla we could run a little workshop
for HW members who would like to have a look at
the HW website and the operation of the chat
room. We could also run through some basic
email issues. So if you are not particularly
“computer/internet/email savvy then don’t hang
back let myself or Robin Wood know and we will
be happy to spend some time going through some
basics. You don’t have to have a computer
because we can show you what is possible on
ours. Well that’s about it, a short newsletter
with not even much in the way of jokes. Not
sure if they are having a “skit” session at
Whyalla but if you are attending we need some
ideas even if it is just to make Happy Hours
more entertaining. Jokes, stories and poems all
make happy hour more interesting. Anyway happy
travelling and look forward to seeing you at
Whyalla or somewhere else up the
road.
PS
I wrote my report prior to
the catastrophe that hit Victoria on the
7th February
and although we are in Nth East Victoria the
fires fortunately were some distance from us
and so we were spared. We happened to be in
Melbourne on that Saturday and all I can say is
that the weather conditions were something that
I hope I never have to experience again. How
the firefighters, police and other emergency
personnel work in those conditions
is
unbelievable. It makes you
sit back and realise how quickly life can
change. Thousands of people happily going about
their lives on Friday night and less than 24
hours later to be totally devastated with loss
of lives, livelihoods, serious injuries and
many left with only the clothes they were
wearing. Our hearts go out to all of those
affected by the fires.
I am not sure whether it’s
appropriate at this time and some of you have
no doubt seen this before but I thought I would
throw it in because it’s all about living life
to the full and doing the things that you want
to do NOW.
“If I had my life to live over
again”
I’d dare to make more
mistakes next time. I’d relax more, I’d limber
up more. I would be sillier than I have been
this trip.
I would take fewer things
seriously. I would take more chances. I would
climb more mountains and swim more rivers. I
would perhaps have more actual trouble but I
would have fewer imaginary ones.
You see, I’m one of those
sensible people who lives safely hour after
hour, day after day.
Oh, I’ve had my moments,
and if I had to do it over again I’d have more
of them. In fact, I’d try to have nothing else.
Just moments, one after another instead of
living so many years ahead of each
day.
I’ve been one of those
people who never goes anywhere without a
thermometer, a hot water bottle, a raincoat and
a parachute. If I had to do it again, I would
travel lighter than I have.
If I had my life to live
over again, I would start barefoot earlier in
the spring and stay that way later into autumn.
I would go to more dances. I would ride more
merry-go-rounds. I would pick more daisies.
Not sure where it came
from but it was signed

From the webmaster
Did you know that we have our own web
site?
www.highwaywanderers.com
Now I
know that not everyone is “internet savvy”
but you don’t have to have your own computer
to get on the web. Maybe you know someone
who is hooked up to the Internet or maybe
ask someone in an Internet café to show you
how to get onto the HW website. It’s a great
way to keep up to date when you are on the
road or at home. Don’t forget we now have
Cheryl Moore ready and waiting to help you
with the internet. Cheryl’s address

Highway Wanderers
Chatroom
If you have access to the Internet and want to
start chatting with other HW members all you
need to do is go to the HW website
www.highwaywanderers.com
and click on the link "Highway Wanderers
Chatroom". The chatroom is exclusive to HW
members and if you want to participate you will
need to contact me at cherylmoore@highwaywanderers.com
I will make sure you are a HW member and then
give you the info to enable you to start
chatting with other HW members in the chatroom.
As well as allowing you to chat (typing chat
not talking) online it is a great way let other
people know what you are doing and where you
are doing it. (Not sure what IT means but
whatever IT is we all hope you are enjoying
doing IT.) You can use the chatroom to get all
sorts of info from other members, where to go,
where not to go, who is travelling where and
enabling people to get together if they are
going to be in the same area. If you need info
on stuff in general an email to the mail list
will most likely get a reply from someone who
can help and because everyone on the list will
see the questions and answers then the rest of
us will benefit as well. It's a win win really
and we need as many fellow chapter members to
be involved as possible. The chatroom is a
closed group and only HW members can
participate so don’t worry about getting junk
mail etc. Do yourself a favour and take a
look.

Water or Coke? Very interesting! Have no idea
whether it is factual or not but makes
interesting reading.
WATER
#1. 75% of Americans are chronically
dehydrated. (Likely applies to half the world
population)
#2. In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism
is so weak That it is mistaken for
hunger.
#3. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's
metabolism as 3%.
#4. One glass of water will shut down
midnight hunger pangs For almost 100% of
the dieters studied in a University of
Washington study.
#5. Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime
fatigue.
#6. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10
glasses of Water a day could
significantly ease back and joint pain
For up to 80% of sufferers.
#7. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger
fuzzy short-term Memory, trouble with basic
math, and difficulty focusing on The
computer screen or on a ! Printed page.
#8. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases
the risk of Colon cancer by 45%, plus it
can slash the risk of breast
Cancer by 79%., and one is 50% less likely to
develop Bladder cancer. Are you drinking
the amount of water You should drink every
day?
COKE
#1. In many states the highway patrol carries
Two gallons of Coke in the trunk to remove
blood from
The highway after a car accident.
#2. You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of
Coke And it will be gone in two days.
#3. To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola
into the Toilet bowl and let the 'real thing'
sit for one hour,
Then flush clean. The citric acid in Coke
removes Stains from vitreous China .
#4. To remove rust spots from chrome car
bumpers: Rub the bumper with a rumpled-up piece
of Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil dipped in
Coca-Cola.
#5. To clean corrosion from car battery
terminals: Pour a can of Coca-Cola over the
terminals to bubble Away the
corrosion.
#6. To loosen a rusted bolt: Apply a cloth
soaked in Coca-Cola To the rusted bolt for
several minutes.
#7... To remove grease from clothes: Empty a
can of Coke Into the load of greasy clothes,
add detergent, and run through a
regular cycle. The Coca-Cola will help loosen
Grease stains. It will also clean road haze
from your windshield.
FOR YOUR INFORMATION:
#1. The active ingredient in Coke is
phosphoric acid. It will dissolve a nail in
about four days. Phosphoric
Acid also leaches calcium from bones and
is a major Contributor to the rising increase
of osteoporosis.
#2. To carry Coca-Cola syrup! (the
concentrate) the Commercial trucks must use a
hazardous Material place
Cards reserved for highly corrosive
materials.
#3. The distributors of
Coke have been using it to clean Engines of the
trucks for about 20 years!
Now the question is, would you like a glass of
water? Or
Coke?
